Description:
Released in September 1991 as the lead single from Diamonds and Pearls, Cream arrived during a period of intense public skepticism regarding Prince's commercial staying power following the critical underperformance of Graffiti Bridge. Accompanied by his newly christened backing band, The New Power Generation, Prince adopted a more radio-friendly, acoustic-anchored pop-blues production. The track slowly climbed the US charts throughout the autumn, officially capturing the number one position on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 23, 1991. It would stand as the fifth and ultimate chart-topping single of Prince's legendary American charting career.
