Description:
The second half of the 90s was a completely different planet.
If the early 90s felt euphoric, the late 90s felt aware. A little darker. A little smarter. A lot less polite. Electronic music stopped asking permission and started making demands. Trip hop got cinematic. Big beat got aggressive. Drum and bass got technical. And somewhere in the middle of all of it, a handful of artists quietly changed what music was allowed to sound like.
This is my ranked list of the 100 best electronic songs from 1995 to 1999. Not just the obvious ones. Not just the radio hits. The full spectrum of what made this era one of the most creatively explosive periods in music history, from underground cult favorites to the anthems that defined a generation of gen x music fans.
Genres covered include trip hop, big beat, drum and bass, trance, darkwave, IDM, ambient electronic, and everything that refused to fit neatly into any category at all.
