The Weird and Wonderful Acts of the 1920s & 30s

Published 05, Oct 2026

Description:
The strangest acts of the 1920s and 1930s, captured on film and restored nearly 100 years later.

These remarkable old newsreels captured an eclectic collection of unusual performers, dangerous stunts, extraordinary talents and curious demonstrations that once fascinated audiences.

Among them is the mysterious “Zoo Doo” Man, a fire eater who claimed he could walk on hot iron and is seen dancing barefoot on broken glass. George Statakis prepares for his fatal 1930 attempt to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. In Havana, Antonio Gallenda demonstrates his unusual ability to inhale and exhale cigarette smoke through his ears. Paul O’Reilly demonstrates how to eat a razor blade, while Carmen Ungaro performs with an enormous four-foot harmonica.

All of this was actually captured by newsreel cameras during the 1920s and 1930s, preserving a fascinating glimpse of the people and spectacles that drew crowds almost a century ago.

Restoration Work

Each piece of archival footage has been individually restored and enhanced from the surviving material. The process includes noise and film-damage reduction, stabilization, frame cleanup, detail recovery, sharpening, upscaling, colourisation and colour correction.
The original footage is then carefully edited together with researched historical information, title cards, sound work and final mastering to create a more immersive experience while preserving the character of the original films.

Real people. Extraordinary acts. Nearly 100-year-old footage brought back to life.
