Mastani was no ordinary woman—she was a warrior, a poet, and a dancer. The daughter of Bundela king Chhatrasal and his Persian consort, she was skilled in swordsmanship, horseback riding, and Kathak. But history remembers her most for her love story with Bajirao I, the Peshwa of the Maratha Empire.
Despite their deep love, the world never accepted their union. As Bajirao’s second wife, Mastani faced rejection from his family and court. She fought alongside him in battle, proving her strength time and again, yet within his home, she remained an outsider. Her devotion never wavered, but society refused to see her as anything more than an unwelcome presence.
When Bajirao died in 1740, some say Mastani took her own life, while others believe she succumbed to grief. What remains is the legend of a love that defied tradition, a love that stood against the world but could not escape fate. Mastani’s name echoes through history—not just as Bajirao’s love, but as a woman who lived and died for the one she chose.
