Description:
Like many other F1 teams, Haas also opted to take a quick outing before the official tests in Barcelona next week. The biggest surprise was definitely to have them done in Fiorano, Ferrari's home circuit, 24 hours after the Italian team's shakedown with the SF-26.
Haas opted to start discovering their 2026 car, called the VF-26, using one of the two filming days available. Compared to shakedowns (limited to just 15km aka 5 laps of Fiorano), filming days are limited to 200km (around 66 laps of Fiorano) and they should be reserved for promotional or marketing purposes but of course teams aim to have the first real checks after all the work done during the winter (or after any important mid-season update). In this video you can watch Oliver Bearman in action as I recorded the first half of the filming day but I'm pretty sure also Esteban Ocon jumped into the VF-26 later in the afternoon.
The VF-26 in the video could still be a sort of test car that will undergo important modifications during and after the official test sessions scheduled over the next few weeks, but this first 'test mule' certainly allows the team to start checking on the mechanical parts, the entire power unit and have first-hand data on the aerodynamics compared to the what they obtained in the simulator and the wind tunnel.
Unlike the last technical cycle, which ended in 2025, 2026 cars will be smaller and lighter, will feature active front aerodynamics and narrower tires. Overall downforce will be reduced by 15-30%, while drag reduced by up to 40%. DRS will be replaced with a "Overtake Mode", requiring drivers to adapt to more power management and different driving styles. F1's new power units will rely more on electrical energy, which will see a 50-50 split between electric power and the internal combustion engine, with nearly a 300 per cent increase in electrical power compared to 2025. The engine itself is still the same 1.6-litre V6 turbo that has been used since 2014 but all the bits around that have changed, including the disappearance of the MGU-H. The engines will be powered by sustainable fuels.
