Description:
Piece: What child is this? (from Microjazz Christmas Collection - Beginner to Intermediate)
Composer: (Traditional English Folk Tune), William Chatterton Dix
Arranger: Christopher Norton
Pianist: David Chang
This arrangement is marked "Jazz waltz". I actually chose to play it with swung eighth notes despite there being no special directions to do so. There are also no specific pedalings written, so I tried my best to pedal for both sonority and clarity.
The melody of "What child is this?" is actually that of "Greensleeves", a traditional English folk tune that may have been around since 1580. Christmas began to be associated with the tune as early as 1686. It wasn't until 1865 that William Chatterton Dix wrote the lyrics to "What child is this?".
This recording is part of the 100 Piece Challenge, which I started on January 1st, 2016. I must permanently memorize 100 pieces of music and record all of them to share online. I have one year to complete this challenge (the deadline is January 1st, 2017). For more information, please read my blog post: https://davidwchang.wordpress.com/2016/01/01/the-40-piece-challenge-and-the-100-piece-challenge-2016/
