Description:
At 17, we created a homework code for danger. Got the ping last night. She hasn't used it in 12 years. My best friend Riley and I dated guys who got controlling. We created a Google Doc called "AP History Final Study Guide" to call for help secretly. If you got an edit notification, check the white text at the bottom. We used it twice before graduation. That was 12 years ago.
I'm 29 now. Riley married Marcus 4 years ago. Everyone loves him. She's 8 months pregnant with twins.
Thursday at 11 p.m., my phone buzzed. Riley edited the doc. I opened it. Three lines in white text.
"He checks everything now."
"Can't leave the house alone."
"Help me please."
I texted her. Two hours later she responded, acting normal. But Marcus should've been at work. I drove over. He was home. Something felt wrong.
I came back when he left. Riley broke down crying. He'd quit his job, isolated her completely, monitored everything, and was documenting her "unfitness" to take the babies.
We left immediately. Smiled at his cameras like we were getting coffee. Drove to the women's shelter.
Marcus called 63 times. She filed for emergency custody. His documentation backfired, showing obsessive control. Her twins were born healthy. She got full custody.
Then police discovered he'd been drugging her prenatal vitamins. He lost his law license. Criminal charges pending.
The code worked twice in 12 years.
