NASA’s Nuclear-Powered Mars Mission: SR-1 Freedom Explained

Published 25, Mar 2026

Description:
NASA just announced one of the most exciting missions in its history: Space Reactor-1 Freedom (SR-1), a nuclear-powered spacecraft launching in December 2028 that will demonstrate nuclear electric propulsion on the way to Mars. Led by Administrator Jared Isaacman, the mission repurposes the already-built and tested Lunar Gateway Power and Propulsion Element, pairing it with a 20+ kW fission reactor using High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium to power advanced ion thrusters for highly efficient deep-space travel.

Along for the ride are three Ingenuity-class Skyfall helicopters that will drop from the sky, land themselves, and explore a future human landing site using ground-penetrating radar to map subsurface water ice for ISRU. This pathfinder not only delivers Mars-relevant science and stunning footage but also proves the technologies needed for future Lunar Reactor-1 and eventual crewed missions to the Red Planet. In this video we break down the full concept of operations, the aggressive two-year timeline, launch options, and why this marks a bold new direction for NASA.
